The World is Flat - by Thomas Freedman

There is a book that has greatly influenced my thought process on "What we teach" and "How we teach" in the American Public Schools and has definitely impacted my own teaching practices. This book is the ACTE (Association for the Career and Technical Education) "Book of the Month." See below. It is truly a MUST READ for every educator, in my opinion. It was extra credit reading for an Internet Tools class that I have recently taken. See below:

The World Is Flat: A Brief History of the Twenty-First Century
By Thomas L. Friedman

Thomas L. Friedman in “The World is Flat 3.0” describes how and why technology and telecommunications have shifted globalization into warp drive. It demystifies the new flat world for readers, allowing them to make sense of the often bewildering scene unfolding before their eyes. This book will alter your perception of the world and inspire you to connect with it in new ways. To see how other teachers have been inspired check out the Techniques article, "Wikis and Blogs: Your Keys to Student Collaboration & Engagement" or the Flat Classroom Project Web site.

Education and Technology

Today's employers are looking for employees that have computer skills and according to a current manager at Covenant Transport, all future mechanics will need training after high school.

Schools are trying figure out how they can meet state requirements, while meeting the individual needs of students as they think about the students' futures. Some high schools are doing this by offering college credit to students as part of the regular high school curriculum and offering a choice of courses in various career pathways. My vision is to see education become more individualized and customized toward a path that is chosen by parents and students.

Watch for postings about my response to the reading of "The World is Flat", by Thomas Friedman.
